Rates, Oil, and Earnings Set the Tape

QQQ's ability to hold 698 is the key test for next week. On Friday, October 23, the Dow fell 1.2%, the S&P 500 lost 0.5%, and the Nasdaq slipped 0.2% after giving back a modest intraday rebound. About three quarters of S&P 500 constituents declined. Brent rose 3.1% to $116.72 a barrel, the 10-year Treasury yield reached 4.99%, and the VIX closed at 19.45. Higher oil and yields are adding pressure to expensive growth stocks. Investors are also weighing the return on AI infrastructure spending, funding costs, and earnings delivery. The session does not point to a single cause.

The University of Michigan's final October consumer sentiment reading was 48.0, versus 48.1 in September. On October 29, the Bureau of Economic Analysis is scheduled to release its advance estimate of third-quarter GDP and September personal income and outlays, including PCE. Several large technology companies will report earnings as well. Those results will test cloud growth, capital spending, and cash flow. If oil, rates, and earnings delivery all weaken together, technology valuations will have less room to absorb disappointment. A one-day rebound is not an all-clear.

AI Funding and Data-Center Execution

OpenAI is negotiating a new funding round of about $30 billion at a $1.25 trillion target valuation, down from an earlier target near $1.4 trillion. That is an 11% reduction. The target remains part of ongoing negotiations; it is not a completed transaction valuation. Investor resistance is shifting the debate toward AI revenue, capital intensity, and cash conversion. Compute demand can grow while investors question whether returns will keep pace with spending. The valuation reset alone does not establish a turn in demand for NVDA or the semiconductor supply chain. Next week's reports should show whether cloud revenue, CapEx, and free cash flow are keeping pace.

OpenAI Fundraising Valuation Targets (Negotiations)

Amazon reached an agreement with Loudoun County to abandon a data-center plan on the former George Washington University campus. Most of the 122-acre site will shift to mixed-use and residential development. Amazon also agreed to donate 25 acres for community facilities and $5 million to the county housing fund. Permitting, local opposition, and power access can delay individual projects. Sites with power and usable capacity may become more valuable; developers that cannot bring capacity online face financing and cash-flow pressure. This is a project-execution risk signal. AWS-wide investment still depends on company guidance.

Positioning Is Tighter, but Shorts Have Not Won

Goldman Sachs client positioning data show net de-risking in seven of the past eight sessions. The October 22 reduction ranked as the fifth-largest daily cut of the year. Global fundamental long-short net leverage has fallen to a one-year low, while short leverage is near a five-year high. Risk budgets are lower, and short exposure has grown faster than long exposure. That does not mean sellers have won.

A crowded short book can extend a selloff if bad news continues. It can also fuel a sharp rebound if the news improves. Positioning alone does not identify the next move. A confirmed QQQ break below 698, alongside weak earnings or higher rates, would strengthen the bearish case. If QQQ holds support and recovers, breadth still needs to confirm the bounce.

SPY and QQQ Levels

SPY's near-term support is $759, with Friday's close around $760. A confirmed close below $759 would take out the first layer of support. Reassess the next downside level if that happens instead of assuming one in advance.

QQQ closed near $704. The key breakdown level is $698, with $728 overhead. A close below $698 that fails to recover would raise downside risk. Holding $698 and reclaiming $728 would weaken the short-term bear case. Wait for confirmation from the close, volume, and breadth; an intraday wick is not enough.

Wait for Earnings Confirmation in Single Names

MSFT, GOOG, and TSLA are earnings-sensitive. Wait for guidance on revenue, AI CapEx, and cash conversion, then compare the stock reaction with the results. A clear reversal on rising volume is a better signal than a low-volume bounce before earnings.
